Wake up and smell the freedom.

Allow me to bring to your attention two must-read stories in The Washington Post:

Stop and seize: Aggressive police take hundreds of millions of dollars from motorists not charged with crimes.

How municipalities in St. Louis County, Mo., profit from poverty.

Each is a tour de farce that would do Kafka, Orwell and Beckett proud.

Taken together or alone, these two pieces should disabuse anyone of the notion that the United States is broke: there is an endless font of money for militarizing police forces and training law enforcement in Stasi tactics (and that’s to say nothing of surveillance). Astute readers will note that this is as true under Obama during a recession as it was under Bush’s boom years. We suffer not from a lack of funds, but from a lack of humanity and wisdom.

The obscene waste of time, money and lives is the entirely predictable outcome—an emergent property, if you will—of an ubercapitalist, white supremacist culture, in a state of permanent war, under the rule of an intractably corrupt system.

For now.
