Conservatives of every stripe have a seemingly endless enthusiasm for blatant dishonesty, from Liars 4 Jeezus claiming Albert Einstein as one of their own to the Bush Administration selling the Iraq war. But sometimes the mask slips, and they break character just long enough to reveal the revolting cesspit that defines their worldview.
Virginia State Sen. Steve Martin (R-eprehensible shitweasel) wrote a Facebook rant defending his anti-abortion views, in which he referred to pregnant women as “hosts.” In response to a Valentine’s Day card he received from reproductive rights advocates, he said:
“I don’t expect to be in the room or will I do anything to prevent you from obtaining a contraceptive. However, once a child does exist in your womb, I’m not going to assume a right to kill it just because the child’s host (some refer to them as mothers) doesn’t want it.”
As Hunter at Daily Kos notes, “Sen. Martin is a personhood advocate, meaning the ‘host’ loses her personhood the minute the sperm and the egg hook up. Sucks to be you, host.”
Sen. Martin later changed his post to refer to the pregnant woman as the “bearer of the child” instead of the “host.” But definitely not a person! Dog forbid.
To be fair, I have no issue with anyone referring to a pregnant person as a host, if by “host” they mean pregnant person. In both a trivial and technical sense, the term is perfectly accurate. But it does raise an interesting question: what is the pregnant person hosting, exactly? Where the Senator is concerned, the host is merely a subhuman incubator and thus not a person, but the merely potential person parasitically attached to this host is a person.
Sen. Steve Martin is a very confused and stupid…person.
