Happy Birthday Oscar Wilde and Mary Daly.

I’ve spent the morning shamelessly pilfering quotes from FFRF‘s Freethought of the Day email (thanks Don!) and elsewhere to add to the Palace collection.  We already had some of the Oscar Wilde stuff because…well, because Oscar Wilde.  (Hello?!)  But Mary Daly’s insights also proved quite invigorating on this magnificent fall day.  She died in 2010 at the age of 81, and oh how I would love to have known her.  Sure, she was a controversial radical feminist lesbian theologian with whom we vehemently disagree on certain matters, but at least she said some interesting things.  Here for your enjoyment are some gems from our sparkling collection.

He hasn’t a single redeeming vice. –Oscar Wilde

I think that God in creating Man somewhat overestimated his ability. –Oscar Wilde

No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist. –Oscar Wilde

Only the shallow know themselves. –Oscar Wilde

Science is the record of dead religions. –Oscar Wilde

Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live. –Oscar Wilde

There is no sin except stupidity. –Oscar Wilde

There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about. –Oscar Wilde

A thing is not necessarily true because a man dies for it. –Oscar Wilde

To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance. –Oscar Wilde

Truth, in the matters of religion, is simply the opinion that has survived. –Oscar Wilde

If God is male, then male is God. The divine patriarch castrates women as long as he is allowed to live on in the human imagination. –Mary Daly

A woman’s asking for equality in the church would be comparable to a black person’s demanding equality in the Ku Klux Klan. –Mary Daly

‘God’s plan’ is often a front for men’s plans and a cover for inadequacy, ignorance, and evil. –Mary Daly

There are and will be those who think I have gone overboard. Let them rest assured that this assessment is correct, probably beyond their wildest imagination, and that I will continue to do so. –Mary Daly

Oops!  I almost forgot — here for your edification is a recently acquired bonus quote:

Liberalism is clinical insanity and moral syphilis. –Some d00d on some blog comment.

Anyway!  If you celebrate nothing else today, celebrate the fact that Oscar Wilde and Mary Daly began their respective journeys making loops around our sun on this date.  And that we are apparently succeeding in pissing off some conservative @$$hole on the Internet.
