And right on cue…it’s Bill Donohue!

[as opposed to alter boys for a change.]

Catholic League president [and as far as we can tell, its only member] Bill Donohue comments as follows: [*Iris grabs popcorn*]

Never has there been a more vicious anti-Catholic advertisement in a prominent American newspaper than the one in today’s New York Times by Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF).  [maybe not so far, but we can always hope!] The demonization of Catholicism is palpable. [hahaha. Catholicism demonizes itself.]

The pretext of the ad is the Catholic Church’s opposition to the Health and Human Services mandate forcing Catholic non-profits to include abortion-inducing drugs, contraception and sterilization in its insurance plans. [he says that like it’s a bad thing…?]  Its real agenda is to smear Catholicism.  [hahaha. Catholicism smears itself.] Here is how the ad begins: “It’s time to quit the Roman Catholic Church. Will it be reproductive freedom, or back to the Dark Ages?” [Excellent question.]

The ad blames the Catholic Church for promoting “acute misery, poverty, needless suffering, unwanted pregnancies, overpopulation, social evils and deaths.”  [perfectly true statement.]  It says the bishops are “launching a ruthless political Inquisition” against women. [perfectly true statement.] It talks about “preying priests” and corruption “going all the way to the top.” [perfectly accurate reflections of reality.] In an appeal to Catholic women, it opines, “Apparently, you’re like the battered woman who, after being beaten down every Sunday, feels she has no place else to go.” [an excellent analogy.]

FFRF is led by a husband and wife team, Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dan Barker. Fortunately for Gaylor, her mother did not follow through on the advice she gave women in her book, Abortion Is a Blessing.  [maybe she did: Annie Laurie’s awesome mother apparently did not breed profusely so that Annie Laurie could have a better life.]

Not a single Catholic who reads this ad will be impelled to leave the Church. [sure about that?] That is not the issue (Catholicism, unlike many other religions, is actually growing in the U.S., and worldwide).  [shit! better run some more ads — quick!]  The issue is the increase in hate speech directed at Catholics.  [um, facts are not hate speech.]

Nothing will stop Catholics from demanding that the Obama administration respect their First Amendment rights, this vile assault by FFRF notwithstanding. [the problem in a nutshell.] Why the Times allowed this ad is another issue altogether. [answer:  $52,000 and something called the “First Amendment.” might want to look that up.]

Contact the “free thought” bigots at FFRF:

Oh, yes, by all means, please do.  I cannot wait to read the incoherent death threats in next month’s issue of Freethought Today.  Please say hi to Annie Laurie and Dan for me, and congratulate them on driving Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Bill Donohue into conniptions.

  1. We’re talking THIS Bill Donohue, the same guy who defended the Church’s abuse of children?
